This is the third recital of the series about Biblical themes in painting. Tonight the outstanding organist Alexander Maykapar suggests reflecting on the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a far from simple theological concept. We will look at the pictures created by great artists, from the Italian Baroque to the golden age of Spanish painting and the best representatives of the Seville School who dedicated their works to Our Lady. These are various styles and various periods, but what unites them is the exquisite art of portraying Mary’s subtle features combining the human and the celestial. The big organ will also tell his story. Each picture has an organ piece corresponding to it, carefully selected for tonight’s recital. The program includes Italian Baroque compositions, from elegant miniatures by Marcello and Polieri to Torelli’s big organ concerto. The recital will culminate in the classical and solemn prelude and fugue in A minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. A combination of painting and a classical organ recital in a big cathedral will leave no attentive listener indifferent.
