Are you sure you will be able to guess the historical epoch by costumes? Perhaps you will, after a thorough study. In the same way it is possible to tell how old a piece of music is by its style. But there are cases that can bewilder even experts. For example, “Ancient Dances” of the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi. We may imagine this composition was written in the age of Antonio Vivaldi. Or perhaps in the age of Mozart? But Vivaldi and Mozart never meet in one piece of music. However an attentive listener will find tunes characteristic of neither of the two. In fact Respighi belonged to quite a different epoch. He worked in the first half of the 20th century, but his music is as beautiful as that of Vivaldi. The latter’s composition will also be presented in tonight’s concert.
