This remarkable work of the famous Russian composer Vladimir Martynov is an attempt to answer the question: how to liberate music from the composer’s dictates? How to access the original musical meaning setting aside the pride of the composer’s self-expression?
This tuneful composition is full of repetitions. They are sort of defense against traumas of the aggressive world. The child protects himself with the help of repetitions: one more time the same tale, the same game, the same gesture. Childhood overcoming adulthood is life overcoming death.
The composition focuses on three main points of Christmas: the arrival of the Magi, the apparition of angels to shepherds and staying beside the manger. From the melodic point of view Martynov’s Christmas is based on pioneer songs of the 1950-s, and this is by no means irony but a sincere image of childhood as it was available in the 20th century. And even now, in the 21st century, it touches the listener’s heart.
