As we think of the Baroque, we imagine fanciful palaces, luxury interiors and garments. Solemnity and grandeur are distinctive aspects of this style, but only true connoisseurs, far from numerous, will mention refined and exquisite miniatures. However Baroque chamber music possesses plenty of such masterpieces. Usually they are modest from the instrumental point of view, indeed you do not need a big orchestra to perform music meant for listening with your heart. Among wind instruments the oboe is particularly touching as it is the closest to the human voice in range and timbre. And there is some delicate and naïve beauty in it, no wonder it is so often entrusted with the task of performing pastoral melodies. The oboe and the organ go together perfectly, and indeed certain organ stops have an oboe shade. An ensemble of these instruments is ideal for presenting sublime images in the music of G.F. Handel, H. Purcell, J.S. Bach. And in a contemporary anthem to Our Lady written by M. Bronner the oboe unites with the human voice in prayer.
