Andante for a mechanical organ or musical clock. What does it mean? Strange though it may seem, but the piece wasn’t intended for a normal organ played by a musician who presses the keys of the keyboard with his fingers and the pedals with his feet. The mechanical organ was one of the most complicated technical achievements of that epoch. It was in fact a barrel organ, but a very upgraded one. Its sound was produced in the same way as in a pipe organ, but mechanically, due to an installed program. Usually the mechanical organ was a detail of a huge clock that started to play the programmed piece at a certain time. Every mechanical organ was very expensive, so music for this piece of luxury was ordered from the most famous composers. Mozart was one of them. Tonight we are going to listen to organ works and vocal sacred music of the great maestro.
