Association of ideas or images has strong power over us. What image comes immediately to our mind when the biggest musical instrument, the organ, is mentioned? We are very likely to think of a huge gothic cathedral, with pipes gleaming somewhere high above, in semidarkness, and stretching into the sky… This kind of ambience does not seem to have anything to do with jazz music, does it? People’s Artist of Russia Vladimir Khomyakov never tires of debunking these myths and illusions! With him the organ stops to be complicated and incomprehensible. The musician’s keen intuition and rich experience in performing jazz music help him to make the organ produce most unusual accords and timbres, his virtuoso performance is surprisingly light and natural. No wonder Vladimir Khomyakov won the first prize at the “Jazz and Church Organ” competition in Hannover. Tonight’s recital will probably provoke very unusual emotions leaving no one indifferent. Indeed even admirers of pure classical music will be able to appreciate the quality of the artist’s organ transcriptions.
