The harmonium was invented in 1840 in France, and very soon it conquered the hearts of music lovers. It was often installed in houses, saloons and even churches. Its sound being similar to that of the organ and its size being much smaller, the harmonium became, so to say, a spiritual antipode of the piano which was just as popular. The piano was for nocturnes, the harmonium was for psalms. We don’t know who was the first to put these two keyboard instruments together, but the result is a wide repertoire for this duo. Both amateurs and professional composers contributed to this repertoire, especially those who were connected with the organ culture. Such music was meant for saloons and cosy home concerts, and for that reason it is very melodious and sentimental, in the spirit of long gone soirées of the 19th century.
Russia also loved the harmonium, but after the 1917 revolution, when “saloon” became almost a curse word, these instruments were sometimes destroyed together with old furniture. In today’s Moscow operable harmoniums are not at all numerous, but the sound of this instrument may be reproduced with the help of certain organ stops. The keyboard duo ARTBENE which is famous for its conceptual art projects will perform this beautiful unknown music on the organ and piano. And since vocal music is indispensable for a saloon soirée, singer Galina Gamburg will take part in the concert.
