If you are surprised at the title of the concert, then you shouldn’t be. Jazz has been feeling at home in Cathedrals for a long time. First, in its development it was rather close to gospel music which is a sacred vocal style; thus soul jazz and various organ trios were born. Secondly, numerous great jazzmen composed pieces on religious themes for the Church. Finally, jazz long ago became a noble genre, “America’s classic music”, according to Duke Ellington.
The concert “Christmas in Sympho-Jazz Style” features the best jazzmen and sacred music performers of Moscow. The unique program includes Christmas carols for choir, organ and wind band, festive hymns for organ and soloists in contemporary arrangements and original compositions by the brothers Ivanov in sympho-jazz style.
Inflammatory pieces for classical guitar will be performed by a young but already acknowledged virtuoso Dmitry Illarionov. The folk element will be represented by soloists of the “Russkiye Uzory”
folk instruments orchestra. Celestial singing will be provided by the “Ex Oriente Lux” ensemble. The concert also features Marina Omelchenko, titular organist of the Cathedral.
